HPS Series Increases Efficiency Of Distributed Power Applications
A bulk front-end switching power supply, the modular HPS series is highly customizable. Models come in 5.25-in. rack configurations that can hold as many as four devices. With power ratings of 1000 and 1250 W, they can achieve up to a total of 5000 W.

All the modules feature universal 85- to 264-V ac input. They also accommodate frequencies from 47 to 440 Hz. Each offers a 0.99 power factor that meets EN61000-3-2 limits for input current harmonics. The outputs, which range from 24 to 60 V dc, include overload protection.

N+1 redundancy and hot-plug capabilities assure maximum reliability. Other features include overvoltage protection, full-cycle ride-through, and up to 85% efficiency. Plus, the HPS series offers 30 ms of holdover storage with more than 5-ms early warning before outputs lose regulation. Also, each module includes a 5-V at 5-A standby supply. An optional 60-W auxiliary 12- or 24-V output is available for driving fan trays. These devices are complemented by such options as an integrated O-ring diode, current monitor, ac line discrimination, and droop or forced current share.

Prices start at about $376 per module. Each rack costs around $205.

Low-Current Shunt References Designed For Portable Devices
Featuring low operating currents, the FAN4040 and FAN4041 are highly useful for space- and cost-sensitive applications. These precision shunt references provide critical power-regulation solutions to portable products.

The FAN4040 is a fixed-output device. It's available in 2.5- and 3.3-V versions with output voltage tolerances as low as 0.1% at 25°C. An adjustable precision shunt reference, the FAN4041 has a maximum output voltage of 12 V. Output voltage tolerances are comparable to those of the FAN4040. Both devices maintain low output noise and a low temperature coefficient to 150 ppm/°C maximum. They also offer an extended operating current range.

The FAN4040 and FAN4041 are contained in SOT-23 packaging. TO-92 packaging is available for the FAN4041. Prices for both products range from $0.44 to $1.21 each in 1000-piece quantities.

New Product Family Begins With A 2.5-GHz LDMOS RF Power Transistor
Using GOLDMOS technology, the PTF 102006 is an internally matched 2.5-GHz LDMOS FET. It's the first member in the forthcoming LDMOS line. This 25-W, 11-dB gain device features a drain-source breakdown voltage of 65 V. It also boasts a load mismatch tolerance of 10 to 1. It's offered in flange packaging measuring 3.85 by 1.03 in.

Samples of the PTF 102006 will be available this autumn. Product announcements for higher-output devices will be made throughout the year.

Two-Cell Alkaline Step-Down Solution Delivers 700 mA
A synchronous step-down dc-dc converter, the LT1612 maintains a switching frequency of 800 kHz. Also, it's contained in an MSOP package and features a minimal external part count. Such factors make this converter ideal for use in any portable device powered by a lithium-ion or two-cell alkaline battery. The LT1612's synchronous action eliminates the Schottky diode required by most other regulators. Due to its burst-mode operation, efficiency remains high even at light loads. Consequently, battery life is prolonged.

Operating from a 2- to 5.5-V supply, the LT1612 boasts internal 700-mA switches. Output voltage can be set as low as 620 mV. The high switching frequency allows for the use of small, inexpensive inductors. Ceramic input and output capacitors reduce the total PCB footprint. Furthermore, the LT1612 offers a 1-µA shutdown. As a result, it virtually prevents battery drain during shutdown, thereby extending operating time in portable devices.

Pricing for the LT1612 starts at $1.20 each in 1000-piece quantities. It's available from stock in an eight-lead SO and MSOP package.
