Class-D Audio Power Amp Targets GPRS And 3G Phones

Sept. 1, 2002

With an eye on designers of GPRS and 3G cellular phones, the TPA2005D1 mono class-D, 1.1W, audio power amplifier does not require an output filter and is specified as being more than 85% efficient. A complete circuit consists of the amplifier IC, two resistors, and one capacitor. The amplifier has a PSRR of 78 dB at 217 Hz and a noise floor of 48 µVRMS over the entire audio band, said to be the best specs in the industry for class-D audio power amplifiers and surpasses some class-AB amplifiers. The TPA2005D1 is offered as the sixth member of the TPA200xDx family of audio power amplifiers. Each device in the family is well suited for any heat sensitive or battery-powered application with audio capability, such as notebook computers, PDAs, and cellular phones. The TPA2005D1 is available now in a surface-mount, 15-ball MicroStar BGA package and is priced at $0.49 each/1,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924, ext 4500.
