Packet And Cell Processor Supports 3.2-Gb/s Throughput

Feb. 1, 1999

The PM5357 S/UNI-622-POS is the industry's first PHY device to meet the SATURN POS-PHY Level 3 Interface specification. That packet-over-SONET/SDH specification allows throughput of up to 3.2 Gb/s and enables high-speed POS interfaces, such as OC-48 and multi-channel OC-12, for next-generation super routers and Layer 3 switches. The highly integrated PM5357 is a 3.3V IC that comprises a dual-mode POS frame processor and ATM cell processor operating at 622 and 155 Mb/s respectively. It's said to be the industry's first 622-Mb/s packet-over-SONET/SDH PHY that integrates serializer/deserializer and clock recovery and synthesis together with a framer and cell processor. Methods for transporting IP are evolving, and the POS-PHY Level 3 Interface enables the alternative packet-over-SONET/SDH method for direct mapping of IP into SONET/SDH. POS-PHY Level 3 is developed and endorsed by the SATURN POS Sub-Working Group, which comprises leading manufacturers of IP packet and ATM equipment. Packet-over-SONET/SDH optimizes link bandwidth utilization by enabling Internet routers to connect directly to SONET/SDH rings without the need for an intermediate layer. For POS-based applications, the S/UNI-622-POS performs comprehensive SONET/SDH clock recovery and framing. The chip is characterized for operation from -40°C to 85°C and supports all functionality required for WAN SONET/SDH applications. It's sampling now in a 304 SBGA package.
