Designers of broadband photonic networks, systems and components should take a look at Photonic System Designer, an integrated design environment that's said to offer cost-effective, flexible end-to-end broadband design at all three levels. With existing fiber-optic telecomm systems being upgraded to speeds of 10- to 40-Gb/s time-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing technologies, the software will enable users to co-design both the electrical high-frequency and optical elements of photonic networks. Designs can be optimized early in the design process to increase network quality and to decrease their time to market. Moreover, the software is configured so that designers can combine electrical and optical modules to meet individual needs.Photonic System Designer is available for Unix platforms from HP and Sun and for PCs using Windows 95 and NT 4.0.
