Missouri S&T's pathway to engineering

Want to build a catapult for a final exam? Missouri University of Science and Technology's Interdisciplinary Engineering 20 course prepares freshman and transfer students headed for engineering degrees with this test: Build a device that projects a marble toward a target. Follow two teams through the course to see if they succeed.

Missouri S&T's microgrid research project

Four neighbors share their generated solar power at Missouri University of Science and Technology's unique microgrid research project. The microgrid also powers a resident's electric car and tests energy technology that could be used in future communities.

Missouri S&T Signature Area: Smart Living

A multidisciplinary team of faculty from Missouri University of Science and Technology connect the school’s strengths in sustainable energy research, architectural design, environmental sustainability and transportation infrastructure through secure computing, sensing and network communications. These technologies are guided by behavioral and environmental psychology, sociology and history to develop a more secure, sustainable society.

Program Overview

Electrical/Computer Engineering

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department strives to contribute to the state, nation, and world through the education of outstanding professionals and leaders in engineering. Our educational focus is on a broad, rigorous education in all areas of electrical and computer engineering with significant hands-on experiences. The program will provide students with an understanding of engineering problem solving at all levels and an appreciation for engineering as a profession.

Objectives:

Technical competency: Graduates will have a sound knowledge of the fundamentals in electrical or computer engineering that allows them to analyze and solve technical problems, to apply hardware and software tools, to create and evaluate technical products, to learn independently, and to succeed in the workplace and in graduate school.

Engineering perspective: Graduates will be capable of understanding complex projects including their evolution and abstraction and the optimization of associated decisions and risk, both locally and globally.

Professional skills and knowledge: Graduates will have the ability to communicate well in both oral and written form, to interact in teams, to manage and lead technical projects, to manage their career, and to conduct themselves with an understanding of ethics, economics, and intellectual property.

Mechanical Engineering

Our program emphasizes open-ended project activities with hands-on “design and build” experiencesthat will begin your freshman year in classes such as Introduction to Design, followed by Introduction to Manufacturing with a significant machine shop component. These experiences will continue throughout your studies and correspond to the theory you’re learning. As a senior, this practical experience will culminate in your capstone design project where you will work as a team on an industry sponsored design project that you will present at the MAE Design Showcase in front of students, family, alumni, academy members, and industry professionals.

All required mechanical engineering classes are taught every semester with each having at least 2-3 sections available. This makes the class size smaller, with a typical class size of 50 students. Our lecture courses are taught by full time faculty members, who are readily available for one-on-one interaction with the students. Through technical electives you will also have the opportunity to broaden or focus your degree on course work in areas like automation, robotics, engines, energy, rapid prototyping, and virtual reality manufacturing. S&T mechanical engineering graduates have the ability to work for a very diverse range of companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Motors, Ford, IBM, Frito-Lay, Anheuser-Busch, Caterpillar, and John Deere to name a few.
