Intelligent USB-to-serial port bridge chips provide serial port peripherals with the instant plug-and-play connectivity and high-speed data transfer of full-speed USB 2.0. The single UART OXUSB950 and quad UART OXUSB954 contain an integral 12-Mbps transceiver and serial interface engine and support baud rates up to 230 Kbps. The ICs are supported by a set of royalty-free USB host-device drivers that create transparent interfaces between USB and serial ports and require no software changes. For legacy applications, the chips provide a simple means to upgrade peripherals from serial to USB communication. Power economy is provided by the integral USB suspend/resume function. An advanced 16-bit microcontroller handles USB transactions and control data processing. Operating at 5 MIPS and featuring 3 KB RAM and masked ROM, the controller enables development of peripherals able to process data before it is passed to the host PC. Both versions of the chip run from a 3.3V supply voltage. The OXUSB950 is packaged in a 44-pin LQFP and the OXUSB954 in a 100-pin LQFP. Pricing is $2.60 each and $7.79 each/1,000, respectively.
