The Matter standard created by the Connectivity Standard Alliance (CSA) is a set of specifications for connecting devices such as lights, thermostats, door locks, and other home-automation products. It’s designed to provide a secure and reliable way to connect products from different manufacturers regardless of the communication methods.

Thus, the standard helps to simplify the development process and improve the user experience across connected products and enables products to be interoperable, secure, and able to communicate with each other, no matter the manufacturer. Matter includes support for different protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Z-Wave. It also provides a framework for developers to create apps and services to control connected products.

The CSA released the first version of the Matter protocol in October of 2022. Since then, companies have been developing a slew of new devices that range from home-automation hubs to smart lighting and everything in between.

To that end, chip manufacturers and companies showcased their latest Matter devices, SoCs, and development kits at this year's CES 2023. Everything from Matter-based hubs to programmable lighting was on display. Bear in mind that the protocol is relatively new, and tech companies are developing new devices around the wireless standard. Still, the momentum to incorporate Matter into the latest technology innovations is high, and we expect to see more devices and dev kits hitting the market throughout the year.

In this roundup, we will look at several of the latest Matter-based gadgets and development boards unveiled at CES.
