The steady rise of electric vehicles, the rapid expansion of renewable energy, the boom in AI data centers—the electric grid is struggling to keep up with it all.
But battery energy storage systems (BESS) are emerging as a key solution, storing excess energy and releasing it during periods of peak demand to ease the pressure on the grid. Often based on durable, long-lasting, low-cost lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, they can also provide backup power for facilities such as data centers and manage the fluctuating power demands of AI workloads. And as a result, stationary energy storage is now expanding rapidly. Things are at the point where automakers such as Ford and GM are redirecting excess EV battery capacity for BESS.
