Novel idea: Air-powered motorbikes

Researchers at the SMS Institute of Technology in Lucknow, India have come up with the concept for a motorcycle engine powered by compressed air. The researchers took a conventional air turbine design and studied how different vane angles influenced the amount of power they could get at a given pressure. The air turbine they have in mind puts out 4 to 5.5 kW at 4 to 6 bars of pressure turning a shaft at around 2,000 to 2,500 rpm. This is enough, they say, to power a motorbike. READ MORE Read More

Clean energy courses come to undergrad engineering curriculum

Mechanical engineering students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Daytona Beach, Fla., campus, will get a chance to enroll in a clean energy course track that teaches about turbines that convert wind and water power into electricity, systems that make energy from the heat of the sun, earth, and ocean, and systems for storing energy. "The Clean Energy Systems track is our response to the growing green energy market and the national call for the production of abundant and economical clean energy," said Maj Mirmirani, dean of the College of Engineering, in announcing the new program. New iPad app: Savings from unplugging office equipment

The PlugCalc app features fill-in fields and drop-down menus to simplify the calculation of power usage for plug loads such as office equipment. In a nutshell, it shows how much energy can be saved by turning office equipment off at night rather than letting it sit idle. According to the DoE and EIA, these loads represent a growing source of electrical consumption in commercial applications, accounting for as much as 20% of total energy use in office buildings.
