Charged up over electric vehicles

EE&T editors recently got a chance to drive Chevy's Volt EV on the back roads of lower Michigan. Our short assessment is the Volt lives up to its advance hype. It truly features some innovative technology and is a drivable car. You'll get a more in-depth look at the Volt in the Nov. - Dec. issue. Meanwhile, send your energy efficiency news to us at [email protected] . Leland Teschler, Editor Read More

Ever drive a GE-100?

Practicalities such as battery weight and limited energy density have been the factors that have limited the role of electric vehicles in society until relatively recently. It is not for lack of trying, however, that electric vehicles haven't become mainstream consumer products. A recent review by GE of electric vehicles with which it has been involved over the years tells the story. The Steinmetz Electric Car in 1914, for example, was a pure electric vehicle able could reach a top speed of 40 miles per hour and was powered by fourteen, six-volt batteries. READ MORE Read More

TFETs get a look from European energy researchers

European researchers are gearing up for project Steeper, which aims to boost the energy efficiency of home electronics, when active, by 10 times and virtually eliminate power consumption when they are in passive or standby mode. To devise more efficient electronics, scientists on the project are looking at tunnel field effect transistors (TFETs) and semiconducting nanowires as a way to drastically reduce semiconductor leakage currents. You, too, can get into the electric vehicle business

This week's World Electric Vehicle Symposium in Shenzhen, China will witness the release of an integrated electric drive for use in electric vehicles. Manufacturers could theoretically use the D1g1tal Dr1ve developed by Remy Electric Motors and MotoCzysz as the basis for their own electric vehicle by just building a chassis around it. Remy says the D1g1tal Dr1ve is a complete system of matched integrated components - including motor, controller, proprietary cooling system, final drive and differential - enclosed in a lightweight aluminum shell. LED LIGHTING

Brouhaha over critical LED streetlight report

Controversy surrounds a recent study called "Streetlights for Collector Roads" issued by the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). It basically said LED lamps were a poor choice for replacing high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights on collector roads, those that typically carry medium traffic and feed into highways. Jim Brodrick, Lighting Program Manager at the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) responded in his blog on the DoE site, claiming “a critical error was committed at the outset which affects all of its conclusions." Color rendering index (CRI) options of 80, 85 and 90 have been developed for XLamp XP-G and XP-E warm white LEDs. The new lamps by LED maker Cree Inc. address lighting applications that need high color accuracy to properly render object colors. Cree says its high CRI XLamp LEDs can deliver light quality comparable to halogen with better efficacy than fluorescents. READ MORE Read More

Filter fans keep electronics cool

Over 175 new models of Hoffman filter fans are available for electronics cooling applications. The fans are made with UV-resistant plastic and foam-in-place gaskets for a tight seal with the cabinet. The fans provide 16 to 571-cfm (28 to 970-M3/hr) airflow, covering a wide range of heat loads. A click-fit design facilitates easy installation, and a snap-open grille allows simple filter replacement. Available fans include side-wall and roof-mount options with ac and dc power input options. Reverse-flow models push/pull air through higher static pressure systems and compact, shallow design models are for installation in tight spaces. The IP55 fans deliver dual protection against water infiltration through a corrosion-resistant metal grille positioned in front of a high-density Z-filter. Miniscule louvers in the metal grille open in the opposite direction of the louvers in the filter fan's plastic grille to create the extra physical path in front of the Z-filter, which further protects against water ingress. An optional stainless-steel shroud partners with the IP55 fan for maximum wash-down protection.Pentair Technical Products Read More
