Baltimore Welcomes PowerSystems World

Sept. 1, 2005
After several years away, PowerSystems World returns to the East Coast and the site of the very successful PowerSystems World in 1997, Baltimore, Maryland.

After several years away, PowerSystems World returns to the East Coast and the site of the very successful PowerSystems World in 1997, Baltimore, Maryland. The Mid-Atlantic region boasts a critical mass of major manufacturing and technology companies, making it an excellent location for you to network with colleagues, meet with manufacturers and suppliers, and learn from leading industry authorities.

If you would benefit by seeing, trying and pricing the latest power electronics components and equipment, learning from leading authorities, and networking with peers and real leaders in the field, then you should attend the Power Electronics Technology Exhibition & Conference, October 25-27 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Must-Attend Conference

This year's conference program will offer in-depth technical sessions on a broad array of topics and includes new sessions on emerging technologies, innovative new products and medical-grade converters. Power Electronics Technology Editorial Director Ashok Bindra and Editor David Morrison directed the content for this year's conference, so you can be sure it will be timely, leading edge and very informative. The conference includes information-packed, one-hour seminars, Professional Advancement Courses, technical paper presentations and several free sessions. See the conference schedule on the opposite page for presentations and times.

Exhibit Hall

Walk the Power Electronics Technology exhibit hall and meet with suppliers who have come to answer your power electronics questions and offer solutions to your challenges. There's no better way to make a product or supplier recommendation than meeting with vendors and inspecting, testing and pricing their products.

Products on display in the exhibit hall include: analog, mixed-signal and digital ICs; batteries and battery products; high-voltage products; magnetics products; passive components; power component and power supply manufacturing equipment; power systems for RF/microwave equipment; sensors and transducers; test instruments and measurement systems; thermal management products; design software (CAD/CAE); and hardware/interconnects.

Poster Sessions

This year, a large number of excellent papers were submitted for presentation at the conference; unfortunately, we were not able to include all of them. But because we believe many of them merit your consideration, we've invited the authors to present their papers as Poster Sessions in the exhibit hall on Wednesday, October 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Keynote Speakers

On Tuesday, October 25 from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Dr. Scott D. Strand, program director of Power/Cooling Procurement Engineering for IBM Corp., will present his keynote address, “Future Power Technology in the Global Marketplace — A Customer Perspective.”

IBM has been working within all areas of the power supply community to foster an awareness of these critical challenges. In this address, Strand will discuss how IBM drives technology to meet our ever-changing needs as well as a different paradigm in how we approach our business in the power industry. He will then discuss some of the areas in which IBM has been changing its approaches and processes for acquisition and delivery of power systems. There will be a high-level view of IBM's unique requirements and how it is working with the industry to provide solutions.

High Voltage Pavilion

If you buy, use or specify high-voltage products and equipment, be sure to check out the High Voltage Pavilion, a special area on the show floor designated for manufacturers of high-voltage equipment. You'll find products, services and solutions that can help you meet your high-voltage requirements.

RoHS the Tip of the Environmental Compliance Iceberg

Ken Stanvik, Design Chain Associates, Wednesday, October 26, 9:45 am-10:45 am

The European Union has implemented into law the Restrictions on the use of certain Hazardous Substances Directive, or RoHS. The Directive restricts the use of certain heavy metals and flame-retardants in electrical and electronic equipment, and provides exemptions for specific materials and applications in the absence of viable alternatives. Products imported into or manufactured in the EU and offered for sale after July 1, 2006, must comply. Today's current directive is only the tip of the environmental compliance iceberg. It's not what you know but what you don't know that can sink your corporate ship. Learn more about other legislation within the EU and across the globe that will have major impacts on your product design, product lifecycle, component suppliers, manufacturing and customers.
