Historic Boston Welcomes International EMC Symposium

The 2003 IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, fondly referred to by organizers as Boston’s EMC Party, will be held Aug. 18 to 22 at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center. In keeping with the influence of the historical city, “Revolutionary Symposium” has been selected as the theme of the annual event.

During the symposium, industry experts and scholars from around the world will present technical papers and sessions, workshops, and tutorials. The program begins on Monday (Aug. 18) with several workshops and IEEE committee meetings. After a three-day break for the technical sessions, five additional workshops on Friday (Aug. 22) close out the symposium.

The traditional five-track technical program begins Tuesday (Aug. 19) and continues through Thursday (Aug. 21). The comprehensive schedule includes nearly 200 technical papers on many aspects of EMC along with open-format sessions so participants can have less formal discussions with authors. Special sessions on topics such as EMC modeling and simulation validation, PCB design and simulation for EMC control, and mechanisms of PCB radiation plus several hands-on experiments and demonstrations also will be held.

A schedule of the workshops and technical program, including the titles of individual presentations, accompanies this article.

Exhibits

More than 200 companies from around the world will exhibit products and services ranging from EMC modeling software to complete test systems. Exhibit hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 20) and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Hynes Convention Center.

NARTE Examination

The NARTE certification exam, a traditional complement to the symposium, will be held on Friday. In addition to the many sessions held throughout the week to help attendees prepare for the exam, a special workshop, Preparing for the NARTE Exam, is offered on Monday. For more information, call 800-896-2783 or visit www.narte.org.

Companions and Children

An extensive Companion Tour program has been developed for symposium registrants and guests. It kicks off Monday morning with a motor coach tour of Boston and Cambridge, includes a whale-watching expedition, and concludes Friday with a visit to the JFK Library.

Children from ages 8 to teens are invited to participate in workshops where they can build some amazing toys and electric gadgets. Sessions will be held on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Registration and Reservations

To register for the symposium and reserve hotel accommodations, contact the 2003 IEEE EMC Symposium at 732-562-3870 or www.emc2003.org. Several registration classifications are available: full five-day program with reduced rates for retired or unemployed attendees; limited for students, guests ages 18 and older, and junior guests from ages 5 to 17; and one day.

The IEEE Travel Service offers discounted airline and rental car rates. For more information, visit www.ieeetravelonline.org, call 800-879-4333, or fax 732-562-8815.
