The 2008 International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility will roll into the Motor City Aug. 18-22 with an appropriate theme of “EMC in Motion.” The symposium will be held at Cobo Center and the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center and feature many offerings spotlighting EMC automotive and portable electronics as well as the aerospace, military, commercial, and wireless segments of the industry.
Special sessions held throughout the technical program will focus on topics that may not have had a significant voice in previous venues. And following in the footsteps of the 2007 EMC Symposium, this year's program will expand the history of EMC by documenting the contributions of early automotive EMC pioneers.
Following its successful debut in 2007 is the Global EMC University, an intensive program targeted toward engineers relatively new to the EMC profession. This special education track, for which CEUs will be awarded to participants, provides information ranging from the basic principles of proper PCB layout that controls radiated and conducted emissions, to redesigning a power supply filter, to using the PSPICE circuit analysis program to solve EMC problems. Participants must pay the full symposium registration fee plus $375 to attend the Global EMC University.
Technical paper presentations, special sessions, and open forums on Tuesday (Aug. 19), Wednesday (Aug. 20), and Thursday (Aug. 21) are the core of the five-day program. To make it easier for attendees to follow a particular area of interest, the papers are organized into technical areas and placed into tracks such as automotive EMC, EM modeling techniques, PCB design and modeling, signal integrity, system EMC test and measurement, computational EM, and system EMC design and modeling. The always-popular series of live experiments and demonstrations also will be presented during this time to reinforce the concepts of EMC with hands-on activity.
Two days of workshops begin on Monday (Aug. 18). More than 20 workshops will be conducted during the two-day split program. The very diverse schedule features mostly half-day sessions; however, full-day sessions are devoted to three significant topics: Fundamentals of EMC and EMC and Wireless Devices on Monday and Automotive EMC on Friday (Aug. 22).
A schedule of the workshops and technical program, including the titles of individual presentations, accompanies this article.
Exhibits
Companies from around the world will be exhibiting the latest EMC products and services ranging from EMC modeling software to complete test systems. Exhibit hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 19) and Wednesday (Aug. 20) and 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday (Aug. 21).
iNARTE Examination
The iNARTE certification exams for EMC engineers and EMC technicians, traditional complements to the symposium, will be held concurrently from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The iNARTE Examinations Preparation Tutorial, part of the Monday workshop offerings, is recommended for anyone planning to take the iNARTE certification examinations. According to symposium officials, this workshop also is valuable to those who plan to attend the Global EMC University. For more information, visit www.inarte.us.
Registration and Reservations
Registration forms for the symposium can be found at www.emc2008.org. Several registration classifications are available: one day; full five-day program with reduced rates for retired, unemployed, or student attendees; guests aged 18 and older; and junior guests aged 8 to 17.
The host hotel is the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. Accommodations may be booked directly through the Marriott at 313-568-8000, 800-228-9290, or https://resweb.passkey.com/go/EMCSOCIETY2008 .
