    A new passive PFC-based switch-mode power supply has been designed for 1U-height, single-output medical applications. The PAM150 achieves a lower cost per watt and other economic benefits by employing a passive PFC technology. According to the company, since the recent declassification of many Class D end devices to the less stringent Class A category per EN61000-3-2 harmonic distortion standards, active PFC technology now provides unnecessary functionality at higher cost. The PAM 150 switcher is said to have greater reliability and higher mean time between failure through use of fewer components, while meeting the appropriate Class A PFC and harmonic distortion requirements for medical equipment, including: NRTL recognition to UL60601-1; CSA C22.2 No. 601-1; Baurt Certification to EN60601-1; and CB test report in accordance with IEC60601-1. In operation, the PAM150 switcher provides a universal 115/230 Vac input selection and a single 150W continuous power output. Users may select one of several factory-set output voltages including 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 24V and 48V. The switcher features optional current-sharing capability for 1+1 redundancy with no special interconnection requirement.
