Intelligent Fan Reduces Complexity, Improves Manageability

Developed in response to Intel's IPMI and SMBus directives, the new Intellifan is an intelligent dc cooling fan that incorporates an I²C interface. This interface accepts speed commands and provides status to the system when queried, eliminating the need for several integrated circuits. The end result, the company says, is a less complex system design, improved manageability and reduced acoustic noise. A self contained management device, the Intellifan features variable speed ranges, rpm indication, integrated temperature monitoring, sensor event reporting, LED indicator, and extended wake-up support. Estimated price of the Intellifan is under $15.
