Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX8713, a highly accurate, low-cost SMBus battery-charger IC for battery-powered portable equipment such as handset car kits and cable-modem batteries.

The MAX8713 is a synchronous, step-down charger that drives n-channel MOSFETs to achieve high dc-dc conversion efficiency and low solution cost. The device uses the Intel SMBus to control the charge voltage and charge current. It charges one to four lithium-ion (Li+) cells in series, at charge currents greater than 2 A.

The MAX8713 provides 0.5% accurate battery-voltage regulation, which increases battery capacity and minimizes charging time. The charge-current regulation accuracy is 5% and the charge-current sense amplifier has low offset error, allowing the use of small-value sense resistors.

The MAX8713 is packaged in a space-saving 28-pin QFN (4 mm x 4 mm) and is specified for the industrial temperature range (-40°C to 85°C).
