Texas Instruments’ highly integrated point-of-load (POL) power module supports up to 3 A of output current and is smaller than a standard TO-220 linear regulator. The new PTH04070W plug-in power module eliminates the need for a heatsink, providing up to 94% efficiency to support low-voltage POL power requirements of DSPs, FPGAs, ASICs and microcontrollers used in telecommunications, networking equipment, instrumentation and high-end consumer products.
TI’s PTH04070W allows operation from either a 3.3-V or 5-V input bus. Leveraging TI’s advanced switch-mode dc-dc topology, the module can efficiently convert a 5-V input bus down to 0.9 V with less than 1 W of power dissipation. Power density is an industry leading 160 W per cubic inch. The output voltage can be adjusted to any voltage from 0.9 V to 3.6 V using a single external resistor. Features for PTH04070W include up to 3-A output current at 85°C; a wide-output voltage adjust of 0.9 V to 3.6 V; efficiencies up to 94%, and an On/Off Inhibit Control; operating temperature range of –40°C to 85°C; and UL/VDE approvals.
The PTH04070W module comes in a double-sided, horizontal through-hole or surface-mount package that measures 12.3 mm × 10.2 mm × 3.5 mm. The power modules are now available in volume production from TI and its authorized distributors. Pricing per module in quantities of 1000 is $4.28. Lead (Pb)-free & RoHS-compatible versions will be available in the first quarter of 2005.
