The efficient high-current operation of the new bipolar transistors from Zetex Semiconductors meets all the performance requirements of dc motor control. Provided in the SOT89 package, they also are a more cost-effective alternative to much larger packaged parts.
With a collector-emitter voltage of 60 V, the ZX5T851Z NPN and ZX5T951Z, PNP devices easily withstand the voltage demands of medium power motor drive circuits.
Their high current gain hold-up characteristics accommodate stall currents, and the bipolars’ low saturation voltages ensure that on-state losses are kept to a minimum.
The equivalent on-resistance of the NPN and PNP transistors is respectively 30 mΩ at 6 A and 32 mΩ at 5 A. The NPN can handle a continuous current of 5 A and a peak current up to 20 A. The equivalent figures for the PNP are 4.3 A and 15 A.
The transistors’ feature a 4.4-mm × 4.0-mm footprint and can dissipate up to 2.1 W. In quantities of 10,000, the ZX5T851Z and ZX5T951Z are priced at $0.24 each.
