Maxim Integrated Products’ new MAX4880-MAX4884 overvoltage protection controllers feature an integrated battery disconnect switch with a current-limit range of 0.525 A to 1.1 A, depending on which part is used. Integration of the current-limit switch in a 3-mm × 3-mm TDFN package reduces both overall external system component count and necessary board space, making these devices suitable for space-constrained applications such as cell phones, digital still cameras, PDAs and MP3 players.

The MAX4880-MAX4884 provide overvoltage protection to 28 V. Overvoltage trip levels range from 4.5 V to 5.6 V, and undervoltage trip levels range from 2.55 V to 4.35 V. Additional features include FLAG signals (overvoltage, overcurrent, battery voltage trip) and an internal charge pump. Also featured are thermal shutdown protection, 15-kV ESD protection and a built-in startup delay that allows the adapter voltage to settle down before turning on the external MOSFET. In addition, the MAX4880 can be configured as a low-cost battery charger.

These overvoltage protection controllers are specified to operate over the extended -40°C to 85°C temperature range. The MAX4880-MAX4884 are available in a 3-mm × 3-mm, 10-pin TDFN package. Prices start at $1.40 for 1000-piece quantities.
