Using Fairchild Semiconductor’s Power-On-Demand service, customers may specify their switchmode power supply (SMPS) requirements online and then receive prototype power supply pc boards within seven days. Customers receive fully populated and tested power supplies for ac-dc SMPS designs in the 10-W to 25-W range. The company charges $199 per design for this service.
Power-On-Demand enables customers to build their own ac-dc adapters. In addition to the power supply prototype, the customer receives full design documentation (test and layout information), which then can be given to contract manufacturer to put the design into production. Although there are many sources for off-the-shelf ac-dc adapters, engineers may opt to use the Power-On-Demand to satisfy requirements such as custom output voltages or adapter cost reduction.
“With the increasing pressure for customers to bring products to market faster, Fairchild’s Power-On-Demand provides a complete production-ready power supply, requiring only UL testing. This capability eliminates time spent in product selection, design and system optimization,” says Robert Gendron, senior director of Marketing and Technical Resources.
Power-On-Demand is another capability of Fairchild’s Global Power Resource—a worldwide network of power design centers, systems application experts, online design tools, evaluation boards, and joint research and development labs.
