America left Hohmless

June 30, 2011
Microsoft will end its Hohm energy service next year.

First Google pulled the plug on its Google Power Meter service. Now Microsoft has followed suit with its Hohm service. Hohm will shut down on May 31 2012.

A statement on the Microsoft blog site reads in part, "The feedback from customers and partners has remained encouraging throughout Microsoft Hohm’s beta period. However, due to the slow overall market adoption of the service, we are instead focusing our efforts on products and solutions more capable of supporting long-standing growth within this evolving market."

Hohm basically was designed to calculate the amount of energy your home used (http://eetweb.com/energy-monitoring/hohm_calculator_062510/). It was based on analytical techniques from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Dept. of Energy.
