Students gear up for green data center challenge

Jan. 23, 2012
College students across the nation can compete in both the Arizona Onsite and Spring Virtual Avnet Tech Games that include alternative energy and energy efficiency challenges.

The Spring Virtual Avnet Tech Games competition for college students will include two categories with energy efficiency themes.

The Onsite Avnet Tech Games competition is open to Arizona college students only and will take place April 14, 2012, at The University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Ariz. Both competitions require students to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem-solving and technical skills.

The 2012 Spring Virtual Avnet Tech Games include a Green Video Competition wherein competitors combine video production skills, environmental awareness and marketing skills to create a short video on environmental initiatives at their college. Among the other events in the Virtual games is the Android App Showdown, where students develop a Google Android App, and Kevin’s High-Tech Home Makeover, a game honoring Avnet employee Kevin Olson, who was left paralyzed after a car accident. Teams compete to design the best all-around high-tech solution that would transform Kevin’s home into a haven of technology allowing him to accomplish a set of specific scenarios and requirements that would make for a better life.

The 2012 onsite Avnet Tech Games with an energy theme include the Green Data Center Challenge where students develop and present a proposal to bring an aging legacy data center forward into a model Green Data Center. There is also an event called the Solar Scrimmage that has students designing, building, testing and presenting the best overall solar-powered "green energy" water pumping system.

Other events in the competition include one for building and troubleshooting a PC, troubleshooting a network, creating an FPGA design, creating digital signage, and a robot obstacle course.

The Arizona Onsite Avnet Tech Games will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at The University of Advancing Technology, 2625 W. Baseline Rd., Tempe, Ariz.
