The WiMAX Mini-PCI reference design just introduced by Wavesat for the unlicensed 5.8-GHz band promises to open the way for fast deployment of WiMAX systems worldwide.
In order to allow equipment manufacturers to rapidly bring WiMAX systems to market, Wavesat Inc. has created a Mini-PCI reference design for the unlicensed 5.8-GHz band. The reference design, which is in the form of an extended-length Mini-PCI card, provides a complete plug-and-play solution for the lower-layer air interface and time-critical low-level MAC functionality (see figure www.wavesat.com.
. However, it allows equipment manufacturers the flexibility to tailor the motherboard to their specific needs by providing the higher-layer application processor and peripherals they require. <p>
Based on the WiMAX Forum profile, the design is a development platform ODMs can use to create system’s employing Wavesat’s Evolutive WiMAX DM256 chip. The reference design offers the opportunity to quickly develop a subscriber unit with a short bill of materials, while also minimizing NRE and risk by using existing broadband CPE platforms. Wavesat’s WiMAX Forum Certified products support both basestations and subscriber units for licensed and license-exempt radio frequencies.
