The WirelessHD organization has completed development of the first wireless specification for high-definition baseband video transmission and will present it to adopters early this year. Completion of the WirelessHD specification enables consumer electronics manufacturers to focus on development efforts for high-definition wireless products. WirelessHD’s 4-Gbit/s wireless digital interface and secure content protection technology will ensure that products based on the specification will be a secure, quick, and easy way to connect, play, transmit, and port HD content among a wide range of devices. The specification includes provisions for universal remote control of all WirelessHD-compliant devices. WirelessHD, or WiHD, is a wireless high-definition digital interface standard operating in the 60-GHz band. It represents the first consumer application of 60-GHz technology, the organization said. The standard is suitable for a wide range of devices, including televisions, HD disk players, set-top boxes, camcorders, gaming consoles, adapter products, and other sources. WirelessHD was formed in October 2006 by Intel Corp., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic), NEC Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., SiBEAM, Sony Corp., and Toshiba Corp. Since then it has grown to include 40 Early Adopter and Promoter companies. It has also gained technical support for content protection for WirelessHD 1.0 from the Motion Picture Association of America and for digital transmission content protection from the Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator.
