The global IT services branch of Wipro Limited will acquire the wireless design arm of OKI Electric Industry Co. in a move that will expand its wireless design portfolio. Wipro signed a deal to acquire Oki Techno Centre Signapore (OTCS), which focuses on innovations in RF (Radio Frequency) and baseband design. The deal is expected to close next month. Wipro is promising a dedicated development center for the 40-member OTCS center, where OKI employees will be able to exchange design resources. Previously, Wipro acquired NewLogic in 2005 to strengthen its position in wireless design in CMOS RF and IPs. Wipro wants to raise its profile in RF and baseband design, forming deeper domain strength in DTV standards, WiMedia UWB, RFID and Wireless LAN 802.11 technology. "The wireless communication IC marketplace today is demanding integrated SoC solutions requiring expertise in digital and RF domain," Ramesh Emani, President of the Telecom and Product Engineering Solutions Division for Wipro Technologies, said in a statement. "The acquisition of OTCS is a significant step in our plans to strengthen the leadership in design services in the RF and baseband technology space."
