Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) said it has developed the first 32-nanometer technology that supports both analog and digital functionality. The company incorporated the technology into its 2Mbyte SRAM test chip. Unlike other 32-nm technology developed by companies like Intel and IBM, TSMC's technology did not use the high-k metal gate transistor to accomplish a low-power design. Instead, it used copper and low-k interconnects. TSMC plans to provide complete digital, analog and RF functions, and high density memory capabilities at the 32nm node. The company presented a paper on the breakthrough today at the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting in Washington, DC.
