Step-Down Synchronous Switcher

July 30, 2009
Synchronous switcher uses integrated MOFSETs, helps achieve Energy Star/90 Plus guidelines, but keeps small footprint.

A new 10-A synchronous buck converter with integrated FETs features wide input, light load efficiency, and reduced solution size for increased power density. The TPS51315 is a D-CAP Mode, synchronous step-down converter with integrated MOFSETs, which provides fast transient response performance with ease of use, less external component count and small footprint. The MOFSETs enable efficiency of more than 91 percent at full 10-A output current. This converter will help in meeting Energy Star/90 Plus guidelines by utilizing auto skip mode and Eco-mode light load control schemes to achieve high efficiency across the entire load range; the externally adjustable switching frequency allows an optimal trade-off between component size and efficiency. With the addition of extra components, the TPS51315 can employ ceramic output capacitors. Available in a thermally efficient 40-pin, 5mm x 7mm QFN package and is specified from -40°C to 85°C ambient. Recommended applications include portable devices, notebook computers, servers, and desktops.
