A dual-coil solenoid minimizes current draw while energized.
A new line of power saving solenoids employs a dual-coil construction offering initial high pull in and high holding force with very low energy consumption. After the solenoid first energizes, a solid-state controller switches power over to the second, high-resistance coil which holds the device in the ON position. The high-resistance coil draws less current than the energizing coil. A typical application for these devices is in door locks, but the manufacturer can taylor the energy use of the holding coil to other applications. Dual-coil operation also allows the solenoid to remain energized for an extended period of time without ever over heating. The key feature of this “Pick and Hold “ device is the solid-state controller used to activate the solenoid and switch to the holding coil for continuous operation.
