A new Brushed DC Motor Control with CAN Reference Design Kit (RDK-BDC24) and a module (MDL-BDC24) are immediately available from Texas Instruments Inc., and improve on previous brushed dc motor designs by providing additional variable speed control capabilities. The kits contain everything needed to get a developer up and running in 10 minutes or less. The open tool kit is designed to jumpstart development in a wide variety of consumer and industrial motion control applications, including factory automation devices and systems, mobile robots, household appliances, pumping and ventilation systems, and electric wheelchairs and mobility devices.

Following are some of the features and benefits of the new kit and module:
• Variable speed control for both 12 and 24 V brushed dc motors at up to 40 A continuous current
• 32-bit Stellaris LM3S2616 MCU and optimized motion control software enables dc motors to run smoothly and quietly over a wide speed range
• Support of open-loop voltage control as well as closed-loop control of speed, position, or motor current
• Rich set of sensor interfaces, high performance Controller Area Network (CAN) interfaces, and control options, including analog and quadrature encoder interfaces
• New RS232-based serial control input that also functions as a serial-to-CAN bridge
• Integrated TI analog for increased efficiency, including a CAN transceiver, RS232 linedriver/receiver, voltage regulator, swift dc/dc converter and current shunt monitor
• Mabuchi RS-555PH-3255 Brushed DC Motor included in kit
• Comprehensive StellarisWare software, complete documentation, LM Flash Programmer utility for firmware updates, BDC-COMM for serial communications with the motor, GUI for monitor and control, and complete source code, schematics and PCB Gerber files
