Reference Design Simplifies Dc-Dc Converter Development

Oct. 8, 2008
Product announcement for the Fairchild RD278 reference design for a 6-A synchronous buck regulator that provides up to 95% efficiency, based on the TinyBuck FAN21SV06 IC.

A reference design for a synchronous buck regulator for telecom, server, set-top box, and other consumer applications features the TinyBuck FAN21SV06, a single-supply, highly integrated, 6-A synchronous buck solution. The RD278 reference design provides up to 95% efficiency depending on the input and output conditions and operates over a wide input voltage range from 8 V to 20 V. The FAN21SV06 can be configured to operate in either master or slave mode. In slave mode, the regulator accepts external synchronizing signals and synchronizes the output switching frequency with the input signal. The output voltage, switching frequency, and current-limit functions in this design can be reconfigured to suit the application by changing a few components. The FAN21SV06 integrates a controller, driver, and optimized power MOSFETs in a compact 5- by 6-mm MLP package. The device has an operating range of 6.5 V to 24 V, and is well-suited to generate various system-level voltage rails easily. The regulator also can be enabled separately allowing power sequencing in point-of-load applications. FAIRCHILD SEMICONDUCTOR, San Jose, CA. (800) 341-0392.
