3V RS-232 Port Is ESD Protected

Aug. 1, 1998

MAX3243E, MAX3244E and MAX3245E are high-speed, low-power RS-232 ports for notebook and subnotebook computers featuring automatic shutdown/wakeup features, high data rate capabilities, and enhanced electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. All transmitter outputs and receiver inputs are protected to ±15 kV using the Human Body Model and the IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge method and to ±8 kV using the IEC-4-2 Contact Discharge method. Each of these 3V communications interfaces is a complete serial port with three transmitters and five receivers that consumes only 1 µA of supply current. MAX3243E enters a low-power shutdown mode if the RS-232 cable is disconnected or if any connected peripheral is turned off, while MAX3244E/3245E enter that mode when there is no valid RS-232 activity for 30 seconds. Also, MAX3243E/3244E guarantee data rates up to 250 kbps and MAX3245E to 1 Mbps.
