IEEE 1394 Link-Layer Controller Comes In Full-Duplex Flavor

April 1, 1999

The PDI1394L21 is a full-duplex, 400-Mb/s version of the firm's existing IEEE 1394-1995 compliant audio/video (A/V) link-layer controller. It's said to be the first A/V link to support simple processor-based manipulation of MPEG-2 transport streams. It reduces overall system cost by enabling the processor to perform tasks in software that were previously done on a separate IC. The chip's isochronous, full-duplex operation enables it to receive and transmit data packets simultaneously. Also, there's on-chip support for IEC 61883, which is the latest digital interface standard for consumer electronics products.
