Developing real-time, Web-ena-bled applications using UML has gotten easier with the release of Rhapsody 3.0. Along with a number of other new features and updates, this tool now supports XML Metadata Interchange (XMI) for exchanging UML information with third-party XMI-enabled UML development tools. This is a key feature because UML-based design implementations often span companies.

Collaboration support is the basis for other enhancements in Rhapsody 3.0, too. NetMeeting sessions can be initiated from the tool. UML designs can be easily sent via e-mail. Rhapsody already had Web publishing support, but the combined features improve designer interaction using the Internet. Also, its visual differencing and merging highlights changes to a UML design, which especially helps in integrating changes from different design teams.

Rhapsody 3.0 expands prior UML diagramming capabilities. Artifacts can be described, maintained, and managed using the Component diagram tool. Communication among objects in the system can be described from an architectural perspective using the Collaboration diagram. Its reverse engineering capability also has been improved with support for imported legacy code, including UML synthesis.

Additionally, Rhapsody 3.0 supports Quality Systems and Software's (www.requirements.com) DOORS. This requirement system management tool can be used to specify and track requirements in UML designs. Running on Linux, Rhapsody 3.0 also can generate code for embedded Linux systems that run on Monta Vista's Hard Hat Linux.
