Software Creates Flexible 56-Kbps Modems

Aug. 1, 1998

Using the unused instruction cycles in the host computer's CPU in order to create modem functionality rather than using a separate digital signal processor or dedicated modem processor is a key feature of the PC56 PVP, a V.90-compliant 56-Kbps host signal processing HSP-based software modem. The HSP technology integrates features such as controllers and cache memory into software and requires that a user simply update the drivers, thereby yielding both high-speed modem functionality and a simple, software upgrade path. The soft modem features K56Flex and V.90 standards-upgradable data/fax/voice and HSP speakerphone features and is functional under Windows 95/NT 4.0 systems. The modem requires a full-duplex sound card in order to support full duplex speakerphone.
