Arrays Eye High-Speed Telecomm Market

Oct. 1, 2000

Targeted at high-speed communications applications, including OC-192, OC-768 and Infiniband systems, the 850-nm 1x4 and 1x12 oxide vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays and GaAs photodetector arrays are designed specifically to handle short-reach optical interconnect assignments.
The VCSEL arrays are said to enable system designs that can operate at typical current thresholds of 1.5 mA and slope efficiencies of 0.4 mW/mA. A 1x4 array is capable of 10-Gb/s transmission speeds and a 1x12 can deliver up to 30 Gb/s. The photodetector arrays operate at data rates up to 3.125 Gb/s. Sample pricing for the VCSELs ranges fro $50 to $100 and for photodetector arrays, $110 to $200.
