Samsung Electronics Co. picked Broadcom's highly integrated Blu-ray and HD DVD system-on-a-chip (SoC) to power the dual format BD-UP5000 Duo high definition (HD) player. The combined SoC platform, BCM7440, enables media player manufacturers to provide universal high definition DVD players that can playback all HD movie titles regardless of the authoring format. Broadcom's SoC is the only solution in which multiple processor cores fully support both Blu-ray and HD DVD standards. For consumers, a universal platform resolves the issue of having to choose between formats and enables playback of all HD movies. Both formats offer high definition video at 1080p resolution, picture-in-picture video, high definition multi-channel audio, 3D style graphics and enhanced interactive features real time director's comments, pop-up menus, interactive gaming and web-enabled applications. "Together with Broadcom, Samsung Electronics has now created the world's best-performing dual-format high-definition DVD player available in the market today," D.H. Shin, senior vice president of the Digital AV Division at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement. "By supporting both HD DVD and Blu-ray at the highest performance levels, Samsung's BD-UP5000 Duo HD player brings us one step closer to ending the format war," Peter Besen, vice president of Broadcom's Consumer Electronics line of business, said in a statement.
