Combining track-and-hold, internal voltage reference, clock, and serial interface in an 8-pin SOIC package, the highly integrated MAX1240/1242 7.5-µs successive-approximation A/D converters are targeted at portable data logging, test equipment, isolated data acquisition, and process control monitoring applications. The new ADCs operate from a 2.7V to 3.6V supply and draw less than 2 mA when operating at the maximum sample rate of 73 ksps. In addition, a 2-µA shutdown input pin reduces power consumption at slower sampling rates for power-sensitive applications. The ADCs' internal 2.5V reference provides up to 400 µA of current for external circuitry. The reference can be disabled to allow for external reference operation. In this mode, the input signal range includes the positive supply rail. The 10-bit MAX1242 is a pin- and software-compatible version of the 12-bit MAX1240.
