Communications Processor Packs ATM, USB And Ethernet Interface Circuitry On-Chip

June 1, 2001

Integrating ATM, Ethernet, USB and telephony interfaces with a high-performance microprocessor core, the RC32355 communications processor is said to be the industry's highest performance processor for gateway system designs. Based on the MIPS instruction set architecture, the processor offers on-chip a 32-bit RISCore 32300 CPU processor core operating up to 150 MHz, a controller for generic interfaces, including memory, serial ports and timers, and on-chip peripherals for specific communications applications.
The peripherals include: an Ethernet MAC unit capable of 10- and 100-Mbit operation; a 25-Mbit ATM segmentation and reassembly controller; a 12-Mbit USB controller; and an industry-standard time division multiplexed (TDM) bus interface to provide direct connection to external voice circuitry. Available in speeds of 133 and 150 MHz, the processor is priced beginning at $22 each/10,000 for the 133-MHz device and will ship in a 208-pin PQFP.
