With a high output drive-capability of 2V&subRMS;, the WM8521 stereo audio d/a converter eliminates the need for external op amps in DVD, digital TV and audio/video receiver electronics. The IC integrates a digital interpolation filter, multi-bit sigma-delta with dither, switched capacitor multi-bit stereo DAC and output smoothing filters. The smoothing filters allow noise shaping for 24-bit audio resolution using non-critical analog components. The switched capacitor filter maximizes clock-jitter tolerance and produces low out-of-band noise. This allows the low-pass filter to be reduced to a simple RC pole or eliminated altogether. The DAC is supplied in a 14-pin SOIC package with three external pins for selection of audio output format, mute control and de-emphasis selection. It supports up to 32-bit I²S, 16-bit right justified and 16-bit DSP audio formats. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 103 dB, and total harmonic distortion (THD) is –90 dB, both A-weighted at 48 kHz. Price is $0.97 each/10,000. WOLFSON MICROELECTRONICS PLC., San Diego, CA. (858) 676-5090.
