More efficient lighting thanks to magnetic energy recovery switch

The MERS is basically a four-transistor active snubber circuit that effectively synthesizes a tunable capacitor. When hooked up with an external inductor, one of the uses of the device is to adjust circuit power factor. When used with fluorescent lamps, the MERS can function as a dimmer. ONR Global funded a series of experiments at Tokyo's Hardy Barracks Installation earlier this year to evaluate how well the MERS lighting controller saved energy. READ MORE

Modeling wind-turbine gearboxes

Gearboxes in general are a result of over 80 years of accumulated engineering knowledge. So why do gearboxes for wind turbines sometimes fail after seven to 11 years — way less than the anticipated 20-year design life of the entire turbine structure? This is a complex question with many variables to consider and no easy answer. For example, it was once thought there was an incomplete understanding of the loading conditions the gearbox sees as it suffers high torques from blades subjected to gusty winds. READ MORERead More

No more Energy Star for external power supplies

External power adapters have come a long way in energy efficiency, so much so that effective December 31, 2010, they'll will no longer be eligible for the Energy Star label, say EPA officials who administer the program. External power adapters come with products like digital cameras, cordless phones and cell phones. EPA figures there are about nine external power adapters for every person in the U.S. – as many as 2.7 billion in total. READ MORERead More

NEW PRODUCTS

Battery charger for portables

The MAX8895 linear battery charger for Bluetooth headsets and portable devices integrates automatic adapter detection and USB enumeration for charging without system software or an external microcontroller for stand-alone charging.
The unit's Smart Power Selector provides seamless distribution of power from the USB power input (VBUS) to the battery and system load for simultaneous charging of the battery while powering the system, as well as operation of the portable device with a discharged battery or no battery. The battery supplements VBUS when the system load exceeds the VBUS input current limit.
The charger features a battery-disconnect switch, current-sense circuit, thermal-regulation circuitry, MOSFET pass elements, and overvoltage protection up to 16 V. Flexible programming options include fast-charge current, termination current, and charge-timer duration. The MAX8895 also supports adaptive battery charging, which reduces charge current when necessary to prevent the charge source from collapsing.
Two USB options are available. The MAX8895X (low speed) and the MAX8895Y (full speed) operate from a 4.0 to 6.6-V supply. The MAX8895 is specified for –40 to 85°C.

Gear reducer operates at 90% efficiency

The IronMan E Series gear reducers operate at 90% efficiency. The gear reducer’s compact housing design lets it directly replace traditional worm-gear reducers. Helical-bevel gear technology provides the unit with 60% more torque than conventional worm-gear designs.
Mounting kits let the E Series replace multiple sizes of worm-gear speed reducers. Shaft kits ranging from 1 to 1½ in. are designed to plug into a standard hollow-output shaft.
Four models are offered, with double reduction ratios from 7.8:1 to 60:1 and power capability to 8.50 hp. Triple reduction units are available by adding a ratio multiplier. Features of the gear reducer include synthetic lubricant, covers sealed with O-rings, and Viton double-lip seals.

Terminal block for Evs, inverters

The 828 Series feedthrough terminal block provides tool-free, maintenance-free, through-panel terminations for control-panel applications such as motor-control centers, UPS systems, and electric-vehicle charging stations. UL Certified for 600 V/40 A, developed for alternative-energy inverter systems, aids in the separation of field-wired power-input connections from sensitive electronics by simplifying conductor passage through enclosure walls. This creates subpanels where power input connections can be made outside the protected area of enclosures or control panels. The block uses Cage Clamp spring pressure-connection technology to simplify terminations. Users lift the lever, insert a stripped conductor (16-6 awg) into the termination port, and lower the lever.
The single-piece device simplifies panel openings and eliminates alignment issues during panel assembly. An integrated lockout feature accommodates a security seal or tagout marker, preventing unauthorized access to external terminations. A panel gasket seal provides a splash-resistant enclosure seal for additional protection and reliability.
