Lighting issues illuminated at Illumination Summit

EE&T's recently concluded Illumination Summit in Orlando focused on issues surrounding certification of SSL operating parameters for lights and fixtures aiming to get Energy Star status. You can view some of the presentations here, though it's not quite like being there. As always, send your energy efficiency news to us at [email protected] -- Leland Teschler, Editor

Energy efficiency? There's an app for that

As the iPhone grows in popularity, useful applications — or apps — are proliferating. Here we present a few of our favorite engineering apps involving energy efficiency. Many are available for download free of charge through the Apple iTunes store and supplier websites, while others charge a nominal fee. READ MORE

Lighting up rooms with nobody in them

We are about a year away from the date on which mandated energy efficiency standards will increasingly make it impossible to sell incandescent bulbs in the U.S. For my part, I hope LED-based lighting is a cheap alternative to ordinary household incandescent by then. Compact fluorescent lights, despite a lot of hype, just don't seem to have lived up to the energy efficiency promises of their promoters. READ MORE

Here comes Energy Star certification

The rules of the game for Energy Star changed on January 1. Now products bearing the Energy Star designation need certification from third-party labs. New third-party certification procedures require manufacturers seeking use of the Energy Star label to conduct testing in EPA-approved and accredited laboratories. But what happens when a company cannot rise to meet the newest Energy Star certification procedures enforced by EPA? READ MORE

High-tech solar inverter weighs in at under 100 lb

A start-up called Ideal Power Converters in Austin, Tex. says it recently flipped the on-switch for a test of its prototype 30 kW commercial-scale PV inverter. The device's claim to fame is its small form factor and elimination of magnetic components ordinarily required for switch-mode power supply topologies. READ MORE
