What's inside an electronic transmission

The May-June issue of EE&T is out. You can peruse the digital edition here. In it you'll get a look at a fully electronic transmission for EVs, what it takes to get an Energy Star rating now that candidate products must undergo third-party testing, and much more. As always, send us your energy efficiency news at [email protected].

Could this be the world's most efficient wind turbine?

Behind the pinwheel-like shape is a lot of engineering that lets the Wind Sail Receptor Inc. turbine work at super-low wind speeds. Creators hope to field versions working down to near 1 mph of wind. The blade design is teamed up with equally innovative generator technology. READ MORE

Rugged Speed and Temperature Sensor
Electro-Sensor's TT420 Temperature Transmitters and ST420 Shaft Tachometers are pre-calibrated, proven solutions that install fast and perform anywhere, providing rugged and reliable monitoring solutions for your toughest machine environments. The TT420 combines a temperature sensor, signal conditioning, and 2-wire loop-powered 4-20mA transmitter into one compact package. The ST420 detects magnetic pulses from a rotating shaft-mounted magnetic pulser target (disc or wrap) and outputs a smooth, continuous 4-20mA analog signal in direct proportion to the pulse frequency (rotating shaft speed).www.electro-sensors.com

New meaning for "efficient" computer code

It used to be that a programmer who coded efficiently was someone able to get a lot done with a few lines of code. Now, the term "efficient code" could take on a new meaning. Researchers have come up with a way to devise computer code in a way that lets computer hardware use a minimum amount of power. Their approach: Devising a special adjunt to the Java programming language. READ MORE

Researchers at Oregon State University recently published a paper describing their work on a scheme they devised for reusing waste heat. It employs an organic rankine cycle engine which works with great efficiency thanks to the use of a special microchannel heat exchanger. The work is now in the prototype stage. A working demo the researchers created turned 80% of every kilowatt of waste heat into a kilowatt of cooling capability. READ MORE

LED LIGHTING

LEDs vs. T8 fluorescents: No contest

And the winner is....at least for now....the T8 fluorescent tube. Recently the DoE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory ran a study examining LED-based lights designed to be drop-in replacements for linear fluorescent lamps (most commonly called T8 lamps. They tested the three best LED equivalents they could find. When the results came in, DoE had to conclude the LED equivalents never paid for the extra cost of the lamps and were dimmer to boot. Bright white OLEDs

A special light extraction method gets the light output of new OLEDs up to 36 lm/W. OLED maker Novaled found a way to boost quantum efficiency in both bottom- and top-emission OLEDs. A special material deposted directly inside the electron transport layers plus an external micro lens array film boosts power efficiency by more than 70% and quantum efficiency by more than 80%. NEW PRODUCTS

100-W open-frame ac/dc power supplies

he ZPSA Series of open-frame ac/dc power supplies now offers a 100-W model. The ZPSA100 accepts a wide input voltage range and has a 1.3-in. profile and industry-standard (3.0 × 5.0-in.) footprint. The supplies offer single-output voltages from 5 to 48 Vdc and 90% efficiency, making them suitable for operation in both convection or air-cooled environments from 0 to 70°C, with appropriate derating. A green LED indicates when power is on. Standard features include overvoltage and short-circuit protection. Since the ZPSA Series accepts a wide input voltage range of 90 to 264 Vac (47 to 440 Hz) or 120 to 370 Vdc, it is can be used globally with no further configuration or input selection.TDK-Lambda Americas Inc.

Dimmable LED drivers

he VLED15 Series of ac-dc LED drivers are designed for driving high-powered LEDs. The constant-current drivers offer flicker-free operation when used with standard triac-based incandescent dimmers. The drivers come in either 115 or 230-Vac inputs and in 11 output-current configurations, ranging from 350 mA to 1.5 A. All units include active power correction and operate up to case temperatures of 90°C without derating. Protections for overvoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature, and short circuit are included.CUI Inc.
