Energy Star home construction up in 2010

One out of four of the single-family homes built in the U.S. last year earned EPA’s Energy Star rating for being energy efficient, that’s an increase over the one in five homes that earned that rating in 2009. Since 1995, about 1.2 million homes have received the Energy Star rating, representing nearly $350 million saved on utility bills and 450,000 vehicles’ worth of greenhouse gas emissions kept out of the atmosphere. Energy Star ratings are based on several requirements, including effective insulation, high-performance windows, construction that eliminates leaks and drags, efficient HVAC equipment, and Energy Star-qualified lighting and appliances.
