Compact 18 W Switcher Meets European Union's 2002/95/EC Directive on Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)

SAN MARCOS, CA-May 13, 2005-TAIYO YUDEN (USA), INC. introduces the LPT18, an AC input, dual DC output, switch-mode power supply designed specifically for RoHS-compliant require-ments. The LPT18 is one of the few switchers in its class that currently meets the European Union's 2002/95/EC Directive on the "Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in Electrical and Electronic Equipment" that will go into effect July 1, 2006. Designed for 0-50C operation, the convection-cooled LPT18 provides 18 W of power with outputs of +5.1 VDC (3.0A) and -5 VDC (1.5 A) at up to 85% efficiency. Typical users include OEMs of telecom, automatic test equipment (ATE), industrial automation, and other end devices for which RoHS-compliance will soon become mandatory for sales into EU member countries.

Designed with true application flexibility in mind, the LPT18 provides a wide input voltage range of 100-240 VAC (47-63 Hz, single phase) and maximum input currents of 0.4 ARMS and 0.2 ARMS at 115 VAC and 230 VAC, respectively, at rated load. The LPT18's single-switch fly-back converter operates in a discontinuous variable-frequency mode to provide an excellent transient response of +/- 3%. The input transient protection provided by the LPT18's MOV transient/surge absorber meets EN61000-4-5 Level 3 surge withstand specifications, and isolation between output terminals and chassis ground is better than 20 Megohms at 100 VDC.

Like other models in TAIYO YUDEN's switch-mode power supply series, the LPT18 comes with quick prototype delivery and allows customer modifications to the standard unit. To ensure 100% out of the box operation, the LPT18 is H.A.L.T. tested (Highly Accelerated Life Testing) to verify design parameters. Physically, the LPT18 measures just 4.5" (114.3 mm) length x 1.25" (31.8 mm) width x 1.1" (27.9 mm).
