500-W DC-DC Converters Target EV Apps

Green Watt Power’s EVD500 series has a constant-current function, allowing it to connect directly to a battery load.

Green Watt Power recently announced the EVD500 series of fully encapsulated, ruggedized dc-dc converters for electric-vehicle (EV) applications. The EVD500 has two input ranges, 30 to 65 V dc and 50 to 130 V dc, with output voltages of 13.5, 14.2, or 27.5 V dc to power auxiliary EV functions such as lights, instruments, accessories, and so forth. In addition, unlike most dc-dc converters in the EV market, the EVD500 has a constant current function, which allows it to connect directly to a battery load, claims the company.

According to Green Watt Power, the EVD500 has superior low battery conservation with a quiescent current draw of less than 30 µA. It features fully isolated input to output and is protected by overvoltage protection, short-circuit protection, input reverse-polarity protection, and overtemperature protection.

Efficiencies for the EVD500 run as high as 93%, and the unit contains a metal baseplate for heat transfer to a metal mounting surface, says the company. All models are housed in an IP66 enclosure for protection against water intrusion.

The EVD500 provides a cost-effective solution for higher power requirements. Multiple EVD500 converters can be wired in parallel with no external circuitry required to obtain up to 5000 W. All models feature remote on/off and are ROHS compliant. Line and load regulation for the EVD500 is 1% and 7% respectively. Output ripple and noise is 100 mV peak-to-peak typical. Load transient response is 10 ms, while startup and rise time is 500 ms. The operating ambient temperature range of the EVD500 is -40 to +75°C.

The MTBF per MIL-HDBK-217F at 25°C ground benign is 150,000 hours. The case size is 7.48 x 2.99 x 1.71 inches (190.0 x 76.0 x 43.5 mm). The weight of the EVD500 is 1.25 kg.

The EVD500 can withstand 8 Gs in x, y, and z axis from 0 to 200 Hz for one minute. It's designed to meet IEC, UL, and CSA requirements with EMC emission: EN12895, EN55022; EMC immunity: EN12895, and ESD: EN12895 (±4 kV-contact, ±15 kV-air).
