Motorola's StarCore DSP, a popular embedded platform, has gained a new toolset from Altium Ltd. The Tasking StarCore Software Development Toolset supports StarCore's wide range of features, such as system-on-a-chip (SoC) and ASIC implementations, the Variable Length Execution Set (VLES) instruction set, and parallel processing units.

The toolset features typical integrated development environment (IDE) tools, including a C/C++/Embedded C++ compiler. The linker generates code that's compatible with the StarCore Application Binary Interface (ABI).

The CrossView Pro debugger works with StarCore On-Chip-Emulation (OnCE) for a low-cost, high-feature debugging environment. The StarCore Instruction Set Simulator enables development before hardware is available. Graphical data analysis and presentation is very handy for DSP applications that often employ FFT algorithms. The debugger is integrated with kernels for operating systems such as CMX, RTXC, OSEK ORTI-compliant RTOS, and Nucleus Plus.

With pricing at $5390, the Tasking StarCore Software Development Toolset v1.0 runs on Windows and Sun Solaris operating-system platforms.
