A new high-speed, battery-driven thermal printer mechanism from Fujitsu Components America is very small and lightweight, meeting the tight space restrictions of portable designs. It targets handheld and portable systems such as point-of-sale devices, measuring and medical instrumentation, and receipt printer applications.

The FTP-628MCL701 print mechanism is 67.5 mm wide, 31.5 mm deep, and 18.5 mm high (see figure). Its narrow frame accommodates compact designs. Also, it can be mounted vertically or horizontally. The mechanism weighs 40 g.

With a variable 4.2- to 8.5-V operating range, the FTP-628MCL701 offers a maximum print speed of 80 mm/s at 8.5 V. It has a print resolution of 8 dots/mm for clear, hard-copy output.

The printer has a 48-mm effective printing area, and it accommodates various 58-mm wide thermal papers from 60 to 100 µm thick. Its removable platen exposes the paper path for drop-in paper loading.

Built-in detection functions include motor overcurrent protection, paper-out/near-end, and abnormal thermal head temperature. The printer has an expected operating life of 100 million pulses or 50 km of paper.

The RoHS-compliant FTP-628MCL701 printer mechanism is available immediately. It costs $22.50 in 1000-piece quantities. Delivery is stock to 16 weeks ARO.
