Motion Control For Disk Drives Uses All-Digital Approach

The L7200, called Mozart, is presented as an advanced smart power "combo" IC for hard disk drives that uses an all-digital approach to the control circuits, allowing it to be scaled from the current 0.6 mm technology to future technologies without redesign. The chip integrates all of the control and power DMOS components needed to control and drive the spindle motor and requires no assistance from an external processor for most functions. Other functions include a calibration circuit for the VCM driver, closed-loop ramp loading, linear and PWM VCM drive, shock sensor detector, digital speed control, and a high-speed serial interface. Pricing in small quantities is $3.20.
