Offering an alternative to electric and hydraulic systems, the APS power-steering system is billed as a quiet, reliable, and low-maintenance brushless system that consists of a permanent-magnet ac motor with integrated speed reducer and an ac drive with I/O interface. It features a CAN interface and handles a wide variety of vehicle applications including Class 1, 2, and 3 lift trucks. The system is available in four different power ranges with three gear ratios. The I/O interface accommodates the direct connection of most steering sensors, while a stand-alone mode allows connection of most steering encoders. A range of safety capabilities support EN 954-1 category 3 or category 4 operation, and an integrated safety system, via the CAN bus, can directly activate an emergency brake. Additionally, the APS continually reports its status to the vehicle controller. DANAHER MOTION, Wood Dale, IL. (866) 993-2624.
