Microchip Technology’s new MGC3130, a configurable electrical-field-based 3D gesture controller, offers low-power and precise hand position tracking with free-space gesture recognition. The controller utilizes the company’s GestIC technology, which enables intuitive, gesture-based, non-contact user interfaces for a broad range of end products. With power consumption as low as 150 µW in its active sensing state, the MGC3130 enables always-on 3D gesture recognition. GestIC technology achieves its high gesture-recognition rates through its on-chip library, the Colibri Suite, which provides designers with a set of recognized 3D hand and finger gestures that can be employed in their products. Examples include Wake-Up on Approach, Position Tracking, Flick Gestures, Circle Gestures and Symbol Gestures performing functions such as on/off, open application, point, click, zoom and scroll. The AUREA GUI, available via free download, allows designers to match their system commands to the Colibri Suite. Samples of the MGC3130 are available now in a 5 x 5 mm 28-pin QFN package. Volume production is expected in April 2013 at $2.26 each/high volume.
